Meet Amy
I'm Amy Barber, an experienced Primary School Teacher and mother of two.
After teaching in both state and independent schools, I now focus full-time on the aspect I love the most: working with children 1:1 or in small groups to help them learn in-depth, challenge them to reach their potential and watch them grow in confidence as well as ability. I specialise in preparing children for their 11+ exam. Children I tutor apply for Kent grammar schools and/or independent school entrance.
11+ individual and group sessions
I teach a curriculum covering all areas in the 11+ test: English, maths, verbal reasoning, non-verbal/spatial reasoning. I have planned each lesson in my 11+ course to equip the children with the knowledge they need. In my experience, what makes the biggest difference for my students is that I actively teach during each session; we don't just go through the practice books.
Most of my sessions are dedicated to children in Year 5 but I also offer a small number of group sessions for Year 4 students to bolster their abilities and get a head-start on their 11+ preparation.
Home education KS2 lessons
In addition to 11+ tuition, I offer individual or group lessons during the daytime for children in Key Stage 2 who are home educated. These lessons cover core curriculum learning in English and maths.
Dedicated classroom space
I have a dedicated classroom space in a newly-built annex at my home in Horsmonden, near Cranbrook. It is a warm, bright space that offers students a welcoming, relaxed environment in which to learn.
A little more about me
I have a first-class politics degree from the University of Bristol. In my early career, I worked in the House of Commons and in various senior communications roles, mostly in financial services, before retraining to become a teacher.
I have always valued education and I know what it takes to achieve academic success. I am passionate about giving children the self-confidence and structured learning support they need to achieve their potential.
